Improvement of Biological Early Warning System Based on Medaka (Oryzias latipes) Behavioral Responses to Physiochemical Factors

AbstractPrevious studies suggested that the biological early warning system based on the behavioral responses of aquatic organisms could be efficiently used to illustrate the behavioral processes and to monitor toxic chemicals in the aquatic environment. However, the physiochemical factors of water quality, such as temperature, turbidity, pH and residual chlorine, may affect the behavioral response and then induce false monitoring results. The effects of these physiochemical factors on the behavior of medaka (Oryzias latipes) suggested that if these physiochemical factors exceed the extreme value that medaka could endure (Temperature <= 5 degrees C, Turbidity >= 50 NTU, pH >= 9.0, pH <= 5.5, residual chlorine >= 0.32 mg/L), the behavior strength of test organisms would decrease significantly. Therefore, for the purpose of the early warning of the accidental pollution events of aquatic environment, the hardware and software of the biological early warning system were improved. After improvement, biological early warning system was mainly made up of two parts, which included the behavior monitoring part and the PF monitoring part.
