The invention relates to a coating material and a preparation method thereof, and in particular relates to an environment-friendly interior wall coating material with calcined shell powder as base stock and a preparation method of the environment-friendly interior wall coating material. The environment-friendly interior wall coating material comprises the following components in percentage by weight : 44-53 percent of calcined shell powder, 7.0-9.0 percent of starch gel, 7.0-9.0 percent of cellulose gel, 7.0-9.5 percent of styrene-acrylic emulsion, 1.0-2.0 percent of glycol, 1.0-2.0 percent of dispersing agent, 0.5-1.5 percent of coalescing agent, 0.5-1.5 percent of defoaming agent, 0.2-0.6 percent of multifunctional additive and the balance of water. The coating material produced by using the preparation method not only accords with basic standards of national coating materials, is resistant to alkali, scouring and low temperature and good in covering effect and construction effect, but also has the function of better adsorbing harmful gases, such as formaldehyde and is an environment-friendly purely natural nuisanceless interior wall coating material.
