AbstractBackground: Photosynthetic oleaginous microalgae are promising feedstocks for biofuels. Acyl-CoA: diacylglycerol acyltransferases (DGATs) represent rich sources for engineering microalgal lipid production. The principal activity of DGATs has been defined as a single-function enzyme catalyzing the esterification of diacylglycerol with acyl-CoA.
